Not atheist, but not religious either. I think it's a combination of these, plus the need to explain the otherwise inexplicable. For example, when Christian missionaries in North Africa and West they found villages located far from water sources. Women in these villages had to walk miles every day to find fresh water. When asked why were so far away villages, the elders say that the gods do not allow them to live closer to the water. After the missions were "successful" whole villages have been connected water sources for comfort. Very quickly, river blindness has become an epidemic in the region. Finally, the cause of river blindness has been attributed to a bacterium that has been extended for a particular black fly. When anthropologists and when they are older people, found that the distance between people to nearby water source corresponded to the maximum flight distance of the black fly.
